Shipping
We ship from the studio in the Netherlands. Orders are usually packed within two working days; orders placed Friday afternoon ship the following Monday.
Where we ship
- Netherlands — PostNL, 1–2 working days from dispatch
- Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg — 2–3 working days
- Rest of European Union — 3–5 working days
- Outside the EU — 5–14 working days, depending on customs
Costs
Shipping is calculated at checkout based on weight and destination. Orders above €60 ship free within the Netherlands.
Tracking
Every order receives a tracking link by email when it leaves the studio.
Returns
If a candle isn't right for you, you can return it within fourteen days of receiving your order. We refund the candle in full once it arrives back at the studio.
Conditions
- The candle is unused — wick untrimmed, wax unburned
- It's still in its original glass and outer packaging
- It's posted back to us within 14 days of delivery
Letter Club subscriptions can be paused or cancelled at any time from your account. Letters and candles already shipped that month are not refunded, but the next dispatch is stopped immediately.
How to start a return
Write us at hello@thekindofplace.com with your order number. We send a return label and instructions. Return shipping is paid by the customer unless the candle arrived damaged or was incorrect.
Refunds
Once the parcel reaches the studio and is checked, we issue the refund within 5 working days. For damaged or wrong items, we cover return shipping and replace or refund — whichever you prefer.
Privacy
Last updated: 7 May 2026. The Kind of Place operates this store. This explains what data we collect, why, and your rights.
What we collect
- When you order: name, email, shipping/billing address, payment details (handled by our payment provider, never stored by us), order contents
- When you subscribe: email, and — for Letter Club — postal address
- When you visit: device, browser, IP, pages viewed, items added to cart
- When you write us: name, email, the contents of your message
Why
To process and ship orders, send updates, send the monthly letter (if opted in), comply with Dutch tax and accounting law, and improve the site.
Who we share it with
- Shopify — hosting and orders
- Klaviyo — newsletter, only if subscribed
- PostNL and other carriers — delivery
- Payment providers — Stripe, Mollie, iDEAL, etc.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising elsewhere.
How long we keep it
Order data: seven years (Dutch tax law). Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. Contact messages: two years.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, or move your data. Write us at hello@thekindofplace.com; we respond within 30 days. Complaints can go to the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens at autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.

Who we are
The Kind of Place is a small candle studio based in the Netherlands. KvK and BTW numbers are listed in the footer. Reach us at hello@thekindofplace.com.
Products
Our candles are made by hand in small batches. Small variations in colour, scent strength, and label placement are part of the work, not faults.
Prices and payment
Prices are shown in euros and include 21% Dutch BTW (VAT). We accept iDEAL, major credit cards, and other methods listed at checkout.
Subscriptions
Letter Club, Candle Club, and The Society renew monthly until you cancel. Pause, skip, or cancel from your account; changes take effect from the next billing cycle.
Liability
Use candles safely — keep away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children and pets. We cannot be held liable for damage caused by incorrect use.
Applicable law
Dutch law applies. Disputes are heard by the competent court in Amsterdam, unless mandatory consumer law dictates otherwise.
