Foreword

On a kind of place.

We make candles, but the candle is not the point. The story of a place is the point.

We believe an object is worth keeping when it carries something — a place, a sentence, a memory said quietly. The candles we make are the way we keep ours, and a way to share the keeping with you.

a kind of place n. · plural: kinds of place

  1. A specific place — real or remembered — that stays with you long after you have left it.
  2. The light through a window. The hour just before dinner. A hillside in late July.
  3. The kind worth telling about, in a single line.
How a candle becomes a story
  1. A place

First, a place — real or remembered. Something specific that stayed.

  2. A sentence

Then a single line about it. The story comes before the candle.

  3. A candle

Then a candle that smells like it. Poured slowly, in small batches.

  4. A letter

Then a letter, once a month. The keeping shared by hand.

This is what we mean when we say a kind of place. The reason we light them slowly. The reason there is a letter at all.

About what is in the jar.

A plant-based wax blend of rapeseed and coconut. A wooden wick that burns evenly and quietly. Poured in the Netherlands, in small batches, with no added colour.

A considered alternative to the mass-produced paraffin candle, stated plainly and left at that.
